R.I.P. Leonard Cohen (1934-2016)

Sad to hear that singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen has passed away.  With Sharon Robinson, Cohen wrote what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded by Diana Ross: “Summertime,” from the 1987’s Red Hot Rhythm & Blues.

Here’s a performance of “Summertime” from the TV special Diana Ross: Red Hot Rhythm & Blues.

  1. Rod says:

This is a lovely song, but it is not Summertime from Porgy and Bess.

  2. Luis Boki says:

“Summertime” gave the album and the special that air of sophistication. And then his protege, wrote one of two of my all time favorite songs, “Cross My Heart” and the second being “Change of Heart”. After being a platinum level fan since 1964, it’s pretty miraculous that she would record two of my all time favorite songs towards the end of the millennium. Of course, through the years, other non-single songs became favorites…..but to date, these two reign Supreme in my heart!

Hi Paul! First of all, the material you’ve been uploading is fantastic! I love the scanned articles as well! A quick question: I’ve always wondered (and have not been able to verify) if “Summertime” was written specifically for Miss Ross for the RHRB album, or if someone else performed the song originally.

Looking forward to your feedback (or anyone else’s feedback)!
